Books

I’ve written six books. Two novels and four books ofshockingly bad poetry. Truth In Advertising won the Thurber Prize for AmericanHumor and Love Poems (for Married People) was a New York Times Bestseller.

2014 Thurber Prize Winner

“No one makes me laugh like John Kenney. So I expected Truth in Advertising to be very funny, and it is. But I was unprepared for how deeply felt and richly observed it would be. This is a beautiful novel and a dazzling debut.” - Andy Borowitz, The Borowitz Report

"John Kenney writes with style, intelligence, humor, and heart. Truth in Advertising is a frank and wickedly funny peek into a world you only think you've seen, a glossy high-powered ad agency. But it is also something more: the story of a man thoroughly marinated in the little white lies of advertising who must learn, finally, to be honest with himself. Highly recommended."- William Landay, author, Defending Jacob

"John Kenney has written a funny, biting, brilliant account of modern capitalism and consumerism. If Mad Men has glamorized the ad game then Truth in Advertising goes one better by making it funny as hell. This is the Catch-22 of contemporary corporate America." – Karl Taro Greenfeld, author, Triburbia

“Made me laugh my ass off. Now I have a new ass.” - Eric Idle, Monty Python’s Flying Circus

“Kenney is supremely gifted at creating flawed, vivid characters and capturing the wonder, ennui, and heartbreak of marriage and parent-hood, and the seemingly small moments that make life precious.” - Publisher’s Weekly

“Kenney's timely satire succeeds with significant nuance...Most winning, though, are Kenney's incisive considerations of parenthood, familial love, and what actually matters when all is seemingly lost.” - Booklist

“A poignant, and often hilarious, portrait of a man in the midst of an extremely public downfall. Kenney, with humor and tenderness, gives us Ted Grayson, TV anchor of a bygone era as he fumbles through a changing media landscape and one terrible mistake and its fallout. This is a very human, very timely story.” - Vanessa Manko, Author, The Invention of Exile.

“A superbly crafted story of a swaggering news anchor who disgraces himself, facing shame and regret in an era when being human in public is a bloodsport. Talk to Me is moving, full of punch and sorrow – and told at the velocity of a man plummeting to earth." - Tom Rachman, author, The Italian Teacher and The Imperfectionists

“With depth and sympathy...[Kenney] saves a sweetly ironic twist for a redemptive ending....A powerful and moving rendition of a story we've been waiting to hear: what it's like to be the bad guy in this ripped-from-the-headlines situation.”
– Kirkus Review(STARRED REVIEW)

“Chronicle[s] our messy, modern lives.” - Los Angeles Times

New York Times Best Seller

“Based on his wildly popular New Yorker piece, Thurber Prize-winner John Kenney presents a hilarious collection of love poems for, well, married people.”

“Full of brilliant wit, dynamic energy, and a heavy dose of reality, Love Poems for Married People takes the poetic form, turns it upside down and leaves it in the dishwasher to dry. Inspired by one of the most shared New Yorker pieces of all time, this collection captures the reality of life once the spark of a relationship has settled--and hilariously so. With brand new pieces that cover all areas of married life, from parental gripes to dwindling sex lives, Kenney's wry observations and sharp humor remind us exactly what it's like to spend the rest of your life with the person you love.” - Penguin Random House

"Love Poems For Married People' Will Help Spice Things Up In The — Zzzzz.”
- Ari Shapiro, NPR News

“This book showed up for review about three weeks ago and the minute I tore it open, I was literally laughing so hard. The poems in this book are perfect for married couples. This book literally spoke to me in a way that no other ‘mommy and marriage’ article on the web could possible come close to.” - Anne Mendez, The Lit Bitch

“Jimmy and I sat on the couch and took turns reading every single poem in this collection. Most had us laughing so hard our faces hurt. A few were bittersweet and the last one (a heartfelt love poem for his wife) made me happy cry. Relatable and insightful and irreverent and accurate. JohnKenney, you’ve made a fan (two fans!!) for life.” - Stephanie Howell
